The realm is fractured, and as the void encroaches, brave new Avatars assemble to contest the changing landscape. Battling across many planes, only one will be Crowned the Victor; will you answer the call?
The Quest for the Crown is a 3-day, 3-night long Old School Sorcery getaway in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is the second installment of the Quest and, as such, Crown II will be Unique! This year, the event takes place from Friday, Sept 5th through Monday, Sept 8th. We all arrive on Friday morning/afternoon and depart on Monday morning. This event is a private event, in which only paid attendees have access to the venue. Everyone invited is vouched for by members of the community and it’s that goodwill we will celebrate all weekend while Contesting the Realm.
COMMUNICATION
Please join the Beasts of the Bay Discord. Once your registration is paid and confirmed, you will be added to the Crown Discord channels. We'll coordinate things via those private channels, such as flights, sleeping arrangements, signups for activities, etc. If you're not added with 24 hours, please contact Phobeef.
REGISTRATION
The cap this year for the event is 32 players due to venue capacity. Your invitation is for you only and cannot be transferred to anyone else. Your spot is not secure until you've paid. The entry fee this year is $1,200 for a single bed and $1,000 for a shared queen. Preferences will be accommodated first come, first served.
The event fee is due upon registration and payment secures your spot. We know this is no paltry sum and as such, the fee covers everything in this Unique invitational event - ride to/from the airport, your bed in a shared room, an abundance of food, drinks, alcohol, exclusive swag, activities, ‘A Curious Limited Contest’, etc. While everyone has their own unique way of weighing value for events, we think the EV will be highly positive with this Quest.
To make sure we don't overbook, this is the registration process:
If you have not paid within 48 hours of when we send the emailed payment instructions, we will move on to the next person in the registration queue. Everyone beyond the 32nd person in the queue will receive an email adding them to a ‘waitlist’.
CURRENT STATUS: 32/32 Spots Registered and Reserved
2/17/2025 Update: SOLD OUT. Please still fill out the form to be added to the waitlist. Be patient with us... people will possibly drop and we'll go down the list in the coming weeks. Thanks!
REFUNDS
Full refunds of your registration fee, for any reason, can be requested on or before Sunday, July 1st. After that, all registrations are final. We need some time to allow for others to register and provide the venue with our final numbers. Reach out to a Beast or email thebeastsofthebay@gmail.com, if you need help with this.
ARTIST
For this year’s Crown event, we will have TWO featured artists for the whole weekend! Coming all the way from Spain for her first Sorcery event our first special guest artist is Marta Molina! Her excitement level is very high and I haven’t seen an artist as motivated as her. Brush up on your Spanish!
Sam McKinnon will also be in attendance and will be leading our painting class this year (details below).
The weekend will be filled with a bevy of Sorcery events. Each event below, as well as special actions throughout the weekend, will earn you points. Spiking an event earns more points but so does diverse and solid gameplay. Whoever has the most points by Sunday night is Crowned the Victor.
‘A Curious Limited Contest’
Throughout the weekend A Curious Limited Contest will test your Limited and trading skills. Four Avatars have been designed exclusively for this weekend’s Limited activities and will be revealed upon arrival at the venue. From then on we will partake in various Limited events building a collection as we play. Be careful how you play though, as you may lose more than your pride as the event will be played for ante. (All weekend long ante Limited, all packs are provided, trading encouraged)
2HD - Team Unified Event
We’re trying something new with 2HD and at Crown, you’ll actually be able to pre-plan with your fellow dragon head! This coordination will pay-off as you and your partner must share a common cardpool. This means that a total of only one of each unique can be found in your combined decklists, two of each elite, etc. Is it better to stack one deck with all the jewelry or spread it out? (4-round event, Avatars are considered Unique for this event)
An Extraordinary Day at the Beach
With the waves crashing in the background we will battle on the beach, unsleeved, with decks made of only Ordinaries and Extraordinaries. Special bonus point opportunities for Waveshaper builds. (3-4 rounds depending on participation)
Festival of the Grand Old Boar
A competitive 1v1 tournament. 50/30. All foils, APs, and curios are legal, play as written. What does Grim Tangle do? We’ll figure it out together! (3-5 rounds depending on participation)
Painting the Realm
A staple of The Beast’s Quest for Urza’s Chalice, we are proud to offer a Unique activity of being a part of a painting class led by our featured artist Sam McKinnon. He will guide us through painting one of his original Sorcery artworks. All materials and supplies are provided for guests interested in taking part in this amazing experience.
Old School Magic
What’s OS Magic? If you’ve never played with old cards, are just dipping your toe, or have been slinging Moxen since 1993 bring them out for fun or for testing for The Shark @ Lobstercon.
Elite Mixes
Come join us to learn about whiskey and taste a wide variety! Hosted by our own local connoisseurs.
Outdoors
Hiking Trails, Beach Access, Heated Pool, Cornhole, and other fresh-air activities will be available all weekend!
NOTE: Pickup only available at SFO this year.
Once you’ve booked your flights, we will ask you to fill out a Google form to submit that information. Reminders will be sent in the #crown2025-flights channel on Discord.
Attendees will be picked up @ SFO 9:30 am - 2:30 pm on Fri, Sept 5th. Guests arriving after 2:30 pm will need to arrange their own transportation.
Everyone must leave the venue by 11 am on Mon, Sept 8th. Rides will drop off anyone that departs SFO 11 am or later. For those with later flights, you may be dropped off early.
